D1 – Rich fens (Caricion davallianae):
Developing on basic rich, mainly calcareous, constantly wet soils, rich fen meadows usually have a shortgrass, sometimes tussocky character. Soil water surface is close to the soil all year round (in tussocky stands periodically can be higher). The dominant species are: Carex davalliana, C. lasiocarpa, Eriophorum angustifolium, E. latifolium, Juncus subnodulosus, Menyanthes trifoliata, Schoenus nigricans, Sesleria uliginosa (S. caerulea). The total area of the habitat is around 350 ha in Hungary. It covers larger areas only on Duna-Tisza köze (250 ha, mainly the transitional Schoenus type). Relatively more, yet small stands can be found in the 60 km range of the western part of Lake Balaton (60-70 ha in the western part of the Dunántúli-középhegység, eastern part of Nyugat-Dunántúl, and southern part of Kisalföld). It appears scarcely in the Északi-középhegység, in Hanság and in the range of the western border (Sopron, Kőszeg, Őrség, Vendvidék). This habitat is adapted to the constant water supply, and often to the cool-cold microclimate; the continuous failure of the water supply threatens several stands even at the present time. The drying leads to uncharacteristic forms, or to other vegetation types (Molinia meadows – D2, Mesotrophic meadows – D34, Uncharacteristic grasslands – OB, OC). As a consequence, the identification of the remnant stands can not be always certain.
