D34 – Mesotrophic wet meadows:
Meadows consisted of tall grasses and poor in halophytic species. The habitat can be found on soils that are mesic during most of the vegetation period (often has spring water cover, but dries out for summer) without peat formation. At the first place it can be recognized from the dominant grass species (Agrostis alba, Alopecurus pratensis, Deschampsia caespitosa, Festuca arundinacea, F. pratensis, Poa pratensis, P. trivialis, Phalaroides arundinacea), although some of them can also dominate other habitats. Beside these species a considerable amount of meadow forbs is typical. The habitat is one of the most frequent grassland types in Hungary (72000 ha). It is rare in the mountains, but frequent in all colline regions and lowlands. Its extension is enlarged by the false categorization of various uncharacteristic meadows into this group (e.g. drying fen and Molinia meadows). On the other hand, the most degraded sites were classified to the habitat of uncharacteristic meadows and tall herb communities (OB), which decreased its extension. Mesotrophic meadows are most widespread on Tiszai-Alföld (39000 ha), mainly in its north-eastern part, and around Alsó-Tisza-völgy. They are also common on Dunai-Alföld (15000 ha). The habitat has smaller area on the intensively cultivated Kisalföld (4050 ha), as well as in the Északi-középhegység (3400 ha), in the Dunántúli-középhegység (1550 ha), in the Dunántúli-dombság (3300 ha) and on Nyugat-Dunántúl (5900 ha). Majority of the stands of the latter three regions occur on the wetter western part; this lies west from the Győr–Kaposvár axis.
