G1 – Open sand steppes:
Drought-tolerant low grasslands with maximum 75% cover, occupying loose, humus poor sand soils on Alföld and more infrequently on hilly regions or foothills. Dominant species are drought-tolerant grasses that form tussocks. Formerly their stands formed mosaics with sand steppe oak woodlands or poplar-juniper steppe woodlands. The total actual area of the habitat is 10700 ha. Most frequent on Dunai-Alföld (9440 ha, 88%), and still occupies large areas within this on the sand dunes of Duna-Tisza köze. Open sand steppes also occur on Nyírség, but form there smaller patches (1020 ha). Despite the several sand areas, the habitat is rare on Kisalföld (44 ha) and on the foothills of Dunántúli-középhegység (25 ha) by reason of the rainier macroclimate and the intensive land use. With the abandonment of grazing it has become quite uncommon in the Dunántúli-dombság (42 ha), and is also infrequent on Nyugat-Dunántúl (8 ha), where its stands are under rapid shrub invasion or natural reforestation. In the Északi-középhegység it can be found especially in the Gödöllői-dombvidék (84 ha). Disappeared from Heves-Borsodi-sík, and rather only some of its species than the vegetation type itself are presented on the old dunes of Tisza-völgy.
