H2 – Calcareous rocky steppes:
Dry steppes on southern slopes of submontane and colline regions, always on solid, calcareous bedrock, dolomite, or on not karstifiable limestones (chalk, mainly Cretaceous, Eocene, and Lajta, Sarmatian limestones, marlstone with Briozoa, travertine, but also others). In fact, they are mosaic habitats composed of patches of open rock grasslands and closed steppes. The stands can be characterised by the joint dominance of species of rocks and steppes. The total area is 5200 ha in Hungary. The centre of distribution is in the dolomite parts of the Dunántúli-középhegység (Keszthelyi-hegység, Balaton-felvidék, Bakony, Vértes, Budai-hegység, partially Gerecse, Pilis), where minimum 5000 ha can be found. Calcareous rock steppes occur with smaller amount on the different friable limestones of the Északi-középhegység (approx. 200 ha, Naszály, Cserhát, Bükk, Aggteleki-karszt). Furthermore, small stands can be found in the Gödöllői-dombvidék, near Sopron, and on Dunántúli-dombság (Mecsek, Villányi-hegység). It appears and forms mosaics almost exclusively with other habitats, like open and closed calcareous rock grasslands [G2, H1], slope steppes [H3a], continental deciduous rock thickets [M7], and scrub woodlands [M1]. The most characteristic stands are in the Dunántúli-középhegység. Since they usually form mosaic with the open dolomite rock grasslands [G2], the extension of the two habitats can be interpreted more easily together; according to our estimation the two habitats cover in the Dunántúli-középhegység together 5500 ha at least.
