M3 – Open salt steppe oak woodlands with openings:

Open Quercus robur woodlands that are lower than 15 m and form mosaics with tall herb meadow steppes, halophytic communities, loess steppes and reed beds. Forest elements are mixed with steppe and halophyte species. Characteristic species: Quercus robur, Acer tataricum, Pulmonaria mollis, Doronicum hungaricum, Melica altissima, and Peucedanum officinale, Aster punctatus, A. linosyris, Artemisia pontica on the fringes. The habitat occurs exclusively on Tiszai-Alföld in Hungary, within this only on the phytogeographical Tiszántúl (Crisicum). Its actual area in the country is 130 ha. It occurs around Újszentmargita, Ohat and Kisújszállás, along Zagyva and Tarna rivers, at Berettyó River and at the western edges of Kis-Sárrét, as well as along Fekete-Körös River. All the closed stands should be categorized to closed lowland steppe oak woodlands (L5); hence the estimation of its extension is only approximate. Oak plantations on salty soils possessing completely uncharacteristic species pool were deleted from the map (e.g. from Borsodi-Mezőség, Körös-vidék and from the vicinity of Maros River). Not the infrequency of suitable sites (bordering zone of floodplains and loess ridges with adequately high level of ground water), but the historical forest use is the background cause of the rarity of open salt steppe oak woodlands. The intensive forest use for thousands of years abolished the stands; consequently they could have survived only among specific conditions.
