P7 – Extensive orchards with ancient cultivars (often invaded by shrubs and trees):

The age-, species- and cultivar-composition of the stands is highly variable. Due to the traditional, extensive cultivation, they are managed without artificial irrigation, soil management and chemical control. The natural shrub layer between the scattered trees is usually sporadic or infrequently missing, but after the abandonment of the orchard often dense shrub layer develops. Extensive mowing and grazing maintains the semi-natural herb layer that can became scarce in the abandoned stands. The total area of the habitat is 3000 ha in Hungary. It remained in the largest extension (1300 ha) in Nyugat-Dunántúl, especially in its southern part (Zalai-dombság, Kemeneshát, Őrség, Vendvidék). Relatively many (1000 ha) ancient orchards are in the Északi-középhegység (mainly Börzsöny, Cserhát, Mátra, Bükk and its vicinity, Putnoki-dombság, Aggteleki-karszt, Cserehát, Tokaj-hegyalja). The centre of the occurrences is the vicinity of Zselic and Mecsek on Dél-Dunántúl (300 ha), and Tisza valley on Alföld (250 ha). It is rare in the Dunántúli-középhegység (150 ha), and practically missing from Kisalföld.
