MÉTA Program >>> Habitat distribution maps

B6 – Salt marshes:
Marshes that are covered by saline water in the major part of the vegetation period (occasionally year-round). The dominant species are: Bolboschoenus maritimus, Scirpus lacustris subsp. tabernaemontani, Eleocharis uniglumis, Scirpus litoralis, occasionally Phragmites australis. A typically wet habitat that requires continental climate. Unfortunately, in spite of the definition many stands of Scirpus lacustris that occurred on saline pusztas, but without strongly saline soils were classified into this group by the MÉTA mappers. Consequently, its actual area is large in the country, almost 7400 ha (the distribution is interpreted according to this broad sense in the followings). Salt marshes occur only on Alföld; except the valley of Sárvíz the occurrence is uncertain in the region west from Duna River, and they can not be found in the Északi-középhegység, either. The habitat has almost equal area on Tiszai-Alföld and on Dunai-Alföld (3700 and 3600 ha). It prefers saline lakes, the saline marshes of solonchak regions and depressions of solonetz pusztas. Salt marshes are most frequent on Duna-sík, on the eastern slopes of Kiskunság, and in and around the Hortobágy.
