D5 – Tall herb communities of creeks and fens:
Occurs mainly in mountain and colline, rarely in lowland environment and is connected to humid, often cool climate, and to constant and fresh, usually moving water supply or more infrequently to fens. Tall forbs with dense foliage and large leaf surface (Petasites hybridus, Angelica sylvestris, Cirsium oleraceum, Filipendula ulmaria) dominate this wet, often fringe habitat. According to our recent estimation it covers 500 ha in Hungary. Primarily it follows streams, most commonly in the Északi-középhegység (approx. 180 ha), occurring in all mountain parts of that. It can be found with slightly smaller area on Nyugat- and Dunántúli-dombság (110 and 110 ha). It is more infrequent in the Dunántúli-középhegység (approx. 40 ha), and becomes extremely scarce or is simply absent in drier parts of that (Balaton-felvidék, Velencei-, Budai-hegység, Vértes, Gerecse). On Alföld it is principally present on fens (approx. 35 ha, but this number should be an underestimation, considering that this habitat is not rare around the ungrazed tussock fens). It is easy to identify this habitat, and it occurs in many places, but always with small extension.
