D6 – Tall herb communities of floodplains and marshes:
Habitat dominated by tall forbs (characteristic species: Tanacetum vulgare, Althaea officinalis, Lythrum salicaria, Lythrum virgatum, Lysimachia vulgaris, Pastinaca sativa, Glycyrrhiza echinata, Atriplex sagittata, Artemisia vulgaris, Rumex crispus). Its identification is not straightforward, hence its total 2200 ha area is considered as an underestimation. The aggregated occurrences on the map are, at least partly, the result of mapper’s decision. Significant water fluctuation and the ceased land use generate suitable site conditions for the habitat. This may be the reason of its rarity in certain parts of the country; especially in the western third of it. Tall herb communities have the largest extension on Tiszai-Alföld (1130 ha, namely they are not frequent here either), as well as on Dunai-Alföld (270 ha, e.g. in Alsó-Duna-völgy). The habitat is not rare in the Északi-középhegység (550 ha, mainly along River Sajó and along the connecting parts of River Bodrog). It is infrequent on Kisalföld (50 ha), in the Dunántúli-dombság (125 ha), on the Nyugat-Dunántúl (5 ha), and in the Dunántúli-középhegység (50 ha). There are several transitions between the disturbed, weedy stands and the more natural stands that are occasionally rich in endemics (Leucanthemella serotina, Armoracia macrocarpa). This fact, as well as the fact that tall herb communities often grow at forest fringes, make their mapping difficult, and demands special attention.
