MÉTA Program >>> Habitat distribution maps

F1a – Artemisia salt steppes:
Only periodically and slightly wet dry grasslands, dominated by Festuca pseudovina and Artemisia santonicum as the most frequent codominant species. Large stands (puszta) are typical. They are usually rich in halophytic species, but do not, or rarely contain loess steppe and wet meadow species. The total actual area is around 33800 ha. It is a very characteristic habitat. Beside from some surprising, small occurrences along Répce, Sió and Hernád rivers, it is completely missing from the major part of the country (Kisalföld, Dunántúli-dombság, Nyugat-Dunántúl, Dunántúli-középhegység, Északi-középhegység). It demands saline groundwater and continental climate. There are large stands on Dunai-Alföld (3900 ha), especially on Duna-sík (3700 ha), and it occurs sporadically along Sárvíz as well. However, 88% of the stands are on Tiszai-Alföld (29900 ha). It forms giant patches on Hortobágy (13000 ha), on Körös-vidék and in the basins of Körös-Maros köze, where, according to historical data, it covered similarly large areas also before the drainages (its area is more or less constant probably from the ice age). One of the most ancient vegetation types of Alföld (Molnár and Borhidi 2003).
