M5 – Poplar-juniper steppe woodlands:

Shrublands or forests dominated by Juniperus communis and/or by Populus alba and P. canescens on the sand regions of Alföld. This species poor, open habitat is typically poor in forest species and forms a mosaic with open sand steppes. Minimal closure of the tree layer is 20%. It occurs characteristically on Duna-Tisza köze, the total actual area is around 3000 ha in Hungary. It is completely missing from Tiszai-Alföld, Nyugat-Dunántúl, from the Dunántúli-dombság and the Dunántúli- and Északi-középhegység, and there are only fragmented stands on Kisalföld (approx. 10 ha). Presumably it is extinct from Mezőföld. Poplar-juniper steppe woodlands are widespread in Duna-Tisza köze, most of the stands can be found in its southern part. Because of the smaller grain size of the sand and the rarity of sand dune regions, the habitat is rare on the eastern gentle “slope” of Duna-Tisza köze; these stands are partly planted native poplar woodlands with spontaneous openings.
